A Weekend in Nordegg: Louise & Robin’s Expanse Cottages Experience
A Quiet Getaway in the Heart of Alberta
Reading time 3.8 minutes

When Louise and Robin from Elite Jetsetter set off to explore the frozen bubbles of Abraham Lake, they knew one afternoon wouldn’t cut it. Opting for a more immersive winter weekend in Nordegg, they traded the idea of camping for a much cozier option: a rustic retreat at Expanse Cottages.
Surrounded by stunning mountain views, clear skies, and snow-dusted evergreens, your getaway begins the moment you arrive.
Cabin Life in Nordegg: Where Comfort Meets Solitude
Their chosen cabin? The Rock. One of six cozy cottages available at Expanse, it struck the perfect balance between rugged escape and creature comforts.
Robin wrote:
“Our cabin had all the luxuries one might expect from a normal hotel apartment; a fully equipped kitchen, super warm and cozy beds, and a big plasma TV for watching movies.”
For the couple, this was more than just a place to stay—it was a much-needed pause from the city. No stress, just the quiet hum of nature, the warmth of a crackling fire, and snow-topped serenity outside every window.

Firelight & Forest: Making the Most of the Experience
Outdoor Fires and S’mores
True to their love for the outdoors, Robin happily embraced the cabin’s firepit, barbecue, and indoor wood stove. Thanks to Expanse Cottages’ thoughtful prep work, firewood, kindling, and newspaper were all waiting—no axes required.
“It was such a pleasure to arrive at night and find out that we didn’t have to get the axe out and start chopping in the dark.”
Their evening included fireside marshmallows, toasted smokies, and plenty of laughter under the stars.
Fireside Indoors, Too
Back inside, the ambiance didn’t fade. A second fire kept the cabin cozy while the couple settled into their plush bed and planned adventures for the next day using a printed local guidebook provided at check-in.

Exploring the Region Like a Local
Armed with the curated guide and local insights, Louise and Robin uncovered some of Nordegg’s nearby gems:
- Crescent Falls – a stunning two-tier waterfall with both top-down and bottom-up views
- Siffleur Falls – accessible via a scenic boardwalk and suspension bridge
- Abraham Lake – known for its frozen methane bubbles, visible in winter
They also mention that Expanse’s proximity to all these spots made planning easy and efficient—perfect for weekend warriors.
Abraham Lake’s Frozen Bubble Phenomenon
In a separate post, the couple dives deep into the how, when, and where of Abraham Lake’s frozen methane bubbles. Their top advice?
- Visit between November and February
- Check Preacher’s Point and the Ice Bubbles Viewpoint
- Use social media to time the conditions
- Bring ice cleats—seriously, the wind is no joke
From tips on gear to safety and even drone-flying advice, their passion for this natural phenomenon is clear. They’ve made the trip multiple times, often bringing friends and family along for the unique experience.

Why Expanse Cottages Made All the Difference
Between the fireside comforts and thoughtful touches, Louise and Robin were impressed with Expanse’s mix of charm and functionality:
“The level of thoughtfulness, service and luxury provided at Expanse Cottages was pretty unexpected, and it really made our trip a pleasure.”
From the welcome guide to the DVD library, it’s clear that staying at Expanse Cottages isn’t just about accommodation—it’s about connection, intention, and a genuine local experience.

During our visit, we stayed at Expanse Cottages. These cottages are located roughly 5 minutes from Nordegg and are situated fairly deep within the forest with no highway sounds to be heard. They’re fully equipped with a living room, kitchen, TV, and a wood-burning stove.
